Sandra
At First:
Sandra Eastlake is a normal, mildly temperamental young woman, fresh out of college and working at a temp agency. She owns a home with her two friends, Jack and Crystal.
But Then:
Sandra is Zebra Girl, the product of a freak magical incident which transformed her into a strange demonic creature with black and white skin and supernatural powers. Feeling shame over her monstrous appearance, she hides herself from the outside world while Jack works to find an antidote to her condition. In spite of her solitude she has had various adventures, including attacks from a monster hunter, heartbreaking encounters with curious citizens, and a foray into another universe. In the course of these she vacillates between despair and reaffirming her humanity.
And Then:
Sandra rules Miscellaneous with fear. An attempt at banishment made by Professor Broadshoulders pushed her towards accepting her demonic identity and now she aims to abandon her humanity altogether. On the up side, she seems happier than she's been in a while. On the down side, it's evil happy.
And Then Again:
Sandra is a monster trapped in the body of a human. Having failed to either rehabilitate or contain her, Jack was left with no choice but to banish her himself. Sent to a dreamlike realm where myths await their return to Earth, Sandra is somehow stripped of the lion's share of her powers and ironically recast in her human form. Angry, lost, surrounded by new enemies and vague allies, she is determined to escape and take revenge on her former friends.
Jack
At First:
Jack Clarity is a young man with plenty of direction in his life. That direction just happens to be all over the place. He is a pervert by nature, and tends to indulge in mischievous projects which usually just cause trouble. The house is shared between him, Crystal, and her best friend Sandra. He tends to irritate Sandra, but they've been a circle of friends since a very young age.
But Then:
Jack and his sister make up the local comic relief. However, his life has been given a definite direction. Since his discovery and subsequent ill-handling of a potent book of magic led to the transformation of Sandra, he carries with him the responsibility of finding a way to give her back what she's lost. God help her. And him too, since Sandra's powers give her the ability to set Jack on fire with ridiculous ease.
And Then:
Jack is the Plaid Wizard, He of The Intersecting Lines. His generally lighthearted demeanor and enduring perversion tend to belie a contemplative disposition. Losing his sister and Sandra to another world prompted Jack to rededicate himself to learning the secret ways of magic held within Tomie, his living compendium. After witnessing the tragedy of a burgeoning magical community and pulling off a successful rescue, Jack is now a far more mature individual than either of his housemates remember. Eventually forced to confront Sandra as an enemy, his hopes of rescuing her from evil are dimming.
Crystal
At First:
Crystal Clarity is a bubbly, friendly girl, eager to please and slightly dim. Sandra's best friend since Kindergarten and Jack's twin sister since birth, she's probably the only reason that the two manage to get along as well as they do. Her telemarketing job is based from home, so she has a decent amount of free time with which to screw around. She generally collaborates with Jack on their little adventures.
But Then:
Crystal is Sandra's main defense against depression. Though her cheer has been challenged by her best friend's plight, she's also reasonably chuffed to know that magic exists and yes Sandra's a demon but isn't it just so neat? Not for Sandra of course but look, magic! Isn't it wow? Like a story book!
And Then:
Crystal is a sweet girl who's gotten kind of sick of being sweet. Finding herself a boyfriend (who happens to be a werewolf) has helped her grow up a bit, and being surrounded by serious people with serious issues has rather derailed her inclination to be constantly upbeat. Jack is no longer the carefree kid he once was, and Sandra isn't much happier. Even Sam Sprinkles, her childhood icon made manifest, is a grim shadow of what he used to be. Empathic as she is, Crystal feels compelled to explore other means of expression. Thus, she has delved into the Goth lifestyle. Nonetheless, she remains the bright heart of this gang of supernatural friends.
Tomie
At First:
Tomie is a book of magic discovered in an attic, the poor handling of which may lead to unpredictable results.
But Then:
Tomie is a book of magic discovered in an attic, the poor handling of which may lead to unpredictable results. And it's alive.
And Then:
Tomie is a book of magic discovered in an attic, the poor handling of which may lead to unpredictable results. And it's alive. And it's maybe the best friend that Jack's ever had. And Jack is the only human friend that it's ever had. And that kind of scares it.
Sam
At First:
Sam Sprinkles is an anthropomorphic rabbit and the amiable star of Meet Sam Sprinkles, a wonderful show about happiness and moral lessons and all like that. It may sound like a Saturday morning cartoon... and maybe it is... but it's also apparently a real production with real actors in "another time, another space." And most of them don't seem to be as enthusiastic about their profession as Sam. It may be due to their living in a dystopia. But Sam's happy so long as the show's on the air.
But Then:
Sam isn't happy. His show's off the air. Now he's a sardonic vagrant wandering the streets of a desolate world ruled by an eccentric tyrant.
And Then:
Sam is many things. He's a rabbit, a housemate, former celebrity, straight man, and Sandra's twin from a parallel universe which somehow overlapped with ours in the form of a children's cartoon show. Some of these things are complicated. Yet Sam has a very straightforward personality. He has little patience for pretense. Like Sandra, he's come out of a life-changing experience searching for his place in the world. The fact that the world he's currently in is literally new to him may or may not be a good thing. Despite his demeanor, he retains a noble heart. He also has a surprising proficiency for kicking ass.
Wally
At First:
Wally is as affable a werewolf as you're ever likely to find. He's recently abandoned the werewolf lifestyle and is (ostensibly) making an effort to rejoin the human race. His general naivete stems from living for many years outside of civilization as the "omega wolf" of his pack. This makes him a good fit for Crystal, whose own naivete and maternal instincts enable them to connect on a very even level. Wally's instincts make him fiercely protective of her in turn. It seems as though he's trying to prove something to himself, but the fact of the matter is that we just don't know that much about him yet. For the record, he doesn't trust Sandra.
