- CAUTION -
The years have changed these characters considerably. So, to provide them with adequate summaries, each one has a series of descriptions tiered according to stages they've grown through. Zandra
At First:
Sandra Eastlake is a normal, mildly temperamental young woman, fresh out of college and working at a temp agency. She owns a home with her two friends, Jack and Crystal. Really, she sort of runs the place.
But Then:
Sandra is now Zebra Girl, the demonic result of a magical accident. She hides herself from the outside world as Jack works to find a cure, vacillating between humoring despair and reaffirming her humanity as she stumbles into various adventures.
And Then:
Sandra rules the town of Miscellaneous with fear. A violent encounter pushed her towards accepting her demonic identity, and now she aims to abandon morality altogether. On the up side, she seems happier than she's been in a while.
And Then Again:
Sandra is trapped in the wrong body. ...Again. Banished to a dreamlike realm, stripped of the lion's share of her supernatural power, angry, lost, and surrounded by new enemies and vague allies, she's determined to escape back to reality.
At Last:
Sandra is now Zandra, sobered by her experiences "over the rainbow." Her home town's changed as well, and she holds sway over a supernatural subculture...
Jack
At First:
Jack Clarity is a young man with plenty of direction in his life. That direction just happens to be all over the place. He's a bit of a pervert and an irritant to Sandra, but they've been a circle of friends since a very young age.
But Then:
Jack and Crystal are still the local comic relief, but now his life's been given real direction. Mishandling magic saddled him with the responsibility of tending to Sandra's fate, and he'll have to become a qualified sorcerer if he hopes to make it up to her!
And Then:
Jack is the Plaid Wizard. His generally lighthearted demeanor and enduring perversion belie a newfound maturity earned after various losses.
At Last:
Jack's been away from Miscellaneous, drifting with Tomie, doing whatever it is that wizards do to make the world more magical. But he's drawn back to town by Zandra's emergence, adopting a relative role of leadership as old friends reunite...
Crystal
At First:
Crystal Clarity is a bubbly, friendly girl, eager to please and slightly dim. Sandra's best friend since Kindergarten and Jack's sister since birth, she's probably the only reason that the two manage to get along as well as they do. Her telemarketing job is based from home, so she has a decent amount of free time with which to screw around with Jack.
But Then:
Crystal is Sandra's main defense against depression. Though her cheer is challenged by her best friend's plight, she's also reasonably chuffed to know that magic exists and isn't it just so neat? Not for Sandra of course but look, magic! Isn't it wow? Like a story book!
And Then:
Crystal is a sweet girl who's gotten kind of sick of being sweet. Finding a boyfriend has helped her to grow up a bit, and being surrounded by serious people with serious issues has rather derailed her inclination to be constantly upbeat. Even her manifest childhood icon Sam Sprinkles is a grim echo of his former self! What better time to turn into a Goth?
At Last:
Crystal is tired. This story's gone on long enough. Can't Sandra just come home? Can't they just... be friends? Like before? Even friendship has limits...
Tomie
At First:
Tomie is a book of magic discovered in an attic, the poor handling of which may lead to unpredictable results.
But Then:
Tomie is a book of magic discovered in an attic, the poor handling of which led to unpredictable results. And it's alive.
And Then:
Tomie is a book of magic discovered in an attic, the poor handling of which led to unpredictable results, and it's alive, and it's maybe the best friend that Jack's ever had. Jack's certainly the best human friend that Tomie's ever had.
At Last:
Tomie is a... person...?
Sam
At First:
Sam Sprinkles is an anthropomorphic rabbit and the amiable star of Meet Sam Sprinkles, a wonderful show about happiness and moral lessons and so on. It may sound like a Saturday morning cartoon... and maybe it is... but it's also apparently strangely real and strangely dystopian. But Sam's happy so long as the show's on the air.
But Then:
Sam isn't happy. His show's off the air. Now he's a sardonic vagrant wandering the streets of a sad world.
And Then:
Sam is many things. Some of these things are complicated. Yet Sam has a very straightforward personality, with little patience for pretense. Like Sandra, he's come out of a life-changing experience searching for his place in the world. The fact that the world he's currently in is literally new to him may or may not be a good thing. Despite his demeanor, he retains a noble heart (and a surprising proficiency for kicking ass).
At Last:
Sam's a tough cookie but he's been through a lot, even by his standards. Now it looks like he might be a little worse for wear...
Wally
At First:
Wally seems like a nice guy.
But Then:
Wally really is a nice guy, and he's the most affable werewolf you're likely to meet. He's recently abandoned the nomadic lifestyle and is (ostensibly) making an effort to rejoin the human race. His general naivete stems from living for many years outside of civilization, which makes him a good fit for Crystal. His instincts also make him fiercely protective of her, though he's not on the best of terms with Sandra.
At Last:
Wally and Crystal have been together for some time now. He's grown stronger and more assertive, and anxious to bring the fight to his enemies...
